A local conservation group is planning a new year of protecting salmon and a vital waterway in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

Members of the Alouette River Management Society (ARMS) are getting ready for their annual general meeting, and taking registrations.

The AGM will take place on May 2 at the Maple Ridge Library, in the second-floor Fraser Room. Sign-in begins at 5:30 p.m. with the meeting commencing at 6 p.m.

ARMS is excited to host an in-person and virtual option AGM again this year, said spokesperson Sophie Sparrow. The society is encouraging anyone interested to attend, as it is a big year celebrating Adopt-a-Block’s 10th Anniversary with ARMS.

To celebrate they will be giving away door prizes from local businesses, while enjoying hot beverages and snacks. Register for the meeting by using the registration link: https://bit.ly/3VkQrz9

Keynote speaker John Roe will be presenting from the Dead Boats Disposal Society, who are dedicated to the removal of abandoned and dead boats, marine debris and garbage from waterways along B.C.’s coast.

Before the Dead the Boat Disposal Society was created, John and Wesley Roe’s family and friends founded The Veins of Life Watershed Society in 1995, to restore and clean up the Gorge Waterway Watershed, from the top of the Colquitz and Craigflower Creek, Upper and Inner Victoria Harbour to Victoria Harbour Ogden Point.

In 2017, they formed the Dead Boats Society to legally seize and dispose of 17 boats and a lot of marine debris.

“We are excited to have John join us and share some of his work and experience, especially with his support in helping us advocate for the removal of abandoned vessels and structures of concern on the Alouette River,” said Sparrow.
