Nominations open for Hometown Heroes athlete

Awards recognize athletes within the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows School District

Nominations are now open for the Hometown Hero Awards.

The awards recognize athletes within the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows School District, who participated in local sports programs, and have gone on to achieve an international level within their chosen sport.

Athletes who have been honoured include: Brian Malfesi, a sprint kayaker who competed in the doubles kayak with Vincent Jourdenais at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and now has his sights set on Paris, France this year; Jaycee Affeldt, a star softball player from Maple Ridge who represented Canada on the world stage; professional cyclist Maggie Coles-Lyster, a member of Team Canada who competes in track and road cycling; and Sara Hopkins who competed with the Canadian Women’s Sprint Kayak Team from 2002 to 2005 and won numerous gold medals in international competitions.

Nominators need to provide a recent photograph and a biography of the athlete they are nominating and explain why they should be chosen. Other letters of support are also welcome.

Winner will be honoured at the Hometown Heroes Awards Banquet, a yearly celebration since 2006.
