It was a day of celebration at Eric Langton Elementary School, as grade three and four students in Mme. Daniels class were given their award for winning the Under 11 category in this year’s Sing Me a Song program.

The students then preformed the song that won, We are Canada, in front of Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, Judith Guichon, and other students at the school. The school beat out 22 other schools, community choirs and amateur musical groups that were invited to write and perform an original song in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday.

Daniels said the students were motivated to work on the song and brainstormed ideas, as well as worked on their own melodies and decided what instruments they want to use.

“They wrote the melody and the chorus in collaboration with Mr. Moerman from January to the end of March,” Daniels said.

The class won $1,000 as a grand prize, contributing half to the music program at the school and half to the WE Organization. The money going back into the school will immediately upgrade some of the drums, as well as buying new guitar strings.

“When we filled out our application we had a little sit down and it was really important to them that we give back to people who are less fortunate,” she said.
