Baseball is officially underway in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, with the Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball Association (RMMBA) hosting its opening-day celebration on April 13.
RMMBA vice-president Miranda Carpenter explained that this year marked the 69th season for the league, with players ranging from 5U to 26U coming out to partake in the festivities last weekend.

The opening pitch of the day was made by 5-year-old athlete Dax Strongitharm, who is entering his first year with the Ridge Meadows Challengers – a team that joins kids with cognitive and physical disabilities to provide an opportunity to play baseball.
The event also featured a dedication ceremony for Larry Walker Sr., with the father of MLB legend Larry Walker Jr. receiving the Builder Award for what the RMMBA called his long-term dedication to helping build the local baseball association.
“His efforts have been instrumental in shaping the community and fostering a love of the game among countless young athletes,” said the RMMBA.

In addition to plenty of baseball being played, the RMMBA opening day also featured various entertainment, including a dunk tank, with local coaches and RMMBA members taking turns getting dropped into a pool of cold water.
“With sunny skies and high spirits, it was a day to remember,” said the RMMBA.
“A big thank you to all our volunteers, sponsors, vendors, umpires, and baseball families for making this day such a success. Your support and enthusiasm are what make our community great.”
