Audit costs local school district $73,000
An audit by the Ministry of Education will cost the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District $73,000 after accounting errors were found in its distributed learning program.
The five-person provincial audit team found the district had double-billed the province for online courses taken by local students.
“It was a clerical error,” said David Vandergugten, the district’s director of instruction for K-12 education.
Vandergugten said a provincial audit of the district’s continuing education program would likely come next.
“They are doing ninja auditing all around the province right now,” said superintendent Jan Unwin. “But every time you raise your hand and question something, you seem to get another audit.”
School District No. 42 had to pay back close to $100,000 in February after the province audited the district’s special education program.
“No matter how well you have done, no matter what, they find something, and they take money away, Unwin said last December when the audit was announced.
