Maple Ridge adds three new parks

Maple Ridge residents will soon have three new parks for their enjoyment.

The Haney Nokai Park at the corner of Church Avenue and 222nd Street in downtown Maple Ridge is set to open fully next month. The park features an outdoor fitness circuit, a half sport court, and a tot and primary age playground that is already open to the public. The park also features a pond and grassy fields, offering a verdant retreat downtown.

The park was named in honour of the Japanese farmers who helped settle Maple Ridge. The “Haney Nokai” was a Japanese agricultural association founded in 1919, and operated as both a cooperative and a cultural organization prior to the Japanese internment during the Second World War.

Located at the corner of 236th street and Rockridge Drive, Deer Fern Park in Silver Valley will feature a basketball half court, playground, trails, as well as an outdoor fitness circuit. One-third of the park site will be left as untouched forest.

Construction is set to begin this month on the park, and should be completed by October.

Cedar Park, also in Silver Valley off of 237th Street, will largely be preserved as a conservation area. A forest trail will follow a winding stream through the woods and connect with the southern third of the park, where a playground, sport court, and an outdoor fitness circuit will be located.

Construction begins this month, and should be completed by October.
