Motorcyclists riding through the City of Pitt Meadows should be on high alert while driving through Pitt Meadows on Lougheed Highway from Harris Road to the Pitt River Bridge.

According to statistics released by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia Thursday, the intersection of Lougheed and Harris Rd. logged the most number of vehicle crashes over a period of five years, with 588 accidents reported and two involved motorcycles.

The second worst intersection in the city is Kennedy Road at Lougheed Hwy.. where 419 crashes were recorded, nine of them involved motorcycles.

Since 2007, there have been 1,826 motor vehicle crashes in Pitt Meadows, compared to 6,743 in Maple Ridge.

However the stretch of Lougheed Hwy.. between Harris Rd. and Kennedy Rd. accounts for more than half of the crashes in Pitt Meadows.

The worst intersection for accidents in Maple Ridge was Dewdney Trunk and Lougheed Highway, where 430 crashes were recorded between 2007 and 2011. The intersection of Lougheed Highway and Kanaka Way logged eight motorcycle crashes.

The intersection of 203rd Street and Lougheed Hwy. was the second worst with 336 crashes, followed closely by Kanaka Way and Lougheed Hwy., where 331 crashes took place over five years.

ICBC added motorcycle crashes to its interactive road maps to remind drivers to share the road with the two-wheelers, especially during the summer months when they are out in force.

According to statistics, motorcyclists are eight times more likely to be killed and 41 per cent more likely to be injured in a crash than other road users, which is why ICBC is asking drivers to use extra caution and watch out for motorcyclists, especially at intersections.
