One dead, two injured in Maple Ridge crash
A man is dead and two seriously injured following a car crash early Sunday in east Maple Ridge.
Around 9 a.m. two vehicles were traveling west along Lougheed Highway and veered left simultaneously just east of 280th Street.
Both vehicles rolled down a 20 metre steep embankment, stopping just short of the CP Rail train tracks.
An 80-year-old man, driving the car in front, was pronounced dead at the scene while his passenger - a woman - was taken to hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was also hurt in the crash and taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
“We have nothing indicating speed as a contributing factor at this point,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Sgt. Dale Somerville, adding it is still really early in the investigation.
“Obviously it was raining at the time of the crash. Other than that we don’t have a lot of details.”
The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction team as well as the Canadian Pacific Railway Police were both on scene investigating the accident.
Lougheed Highway in between 280th and 287th Street was closed for most of the day due to the investigation.
The CP Rail line was reduced to one track.
