Municipalities get traffic fine windfall

The municipalities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows can thank bad drivers for an injection of cash from the province via its traffic fine revenue sharing program.

This year, Maple Ridge will receive $532,172 while Pitt Meadows is set to $135,662 plus an additional $122,250 in Small Community Grant funding.

Funding comes from the traffic fine program — part of almost $74 million being invested into communities across B.C. to help cover costs of policing, new equipment, increased community safety initiatives, infrastructure and other priorities.

"This funding will help provide resources necessary to maintaining proven programs that protect our citizens,” Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton said.

“The small community grant will allow our city of Pitt Meadows to address local priority projects, and in doing so, will help ensure the services our citizens need,” MLA Doug Bing said. “The traffic fine grant will help with policing costs and crime prevention, keeping our community safe.”

“In a small community every dollar counts and these two programs assist us to continue to build a safe and sustainable community while continuing to fund our local services and minimize tax rate increases,” Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters said.
