Firefighters were at 11 locations in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows shaking their boots and taking donations on Saturday.

In December every year, firefighters and members of the Youth Academy spend the day outside each of the major grocery stores in Maple Ridge and collect food and toy donations, as well as cash to support the Friends in Need Food Bank and the Christmas Hamper Society.

Firefighters for Families started in 2002 with both local fire departments calling in all their members to volunteer.

In 2015, they raised more than $17,000 for the two charities, and last year raised just under $14,000.
