Maple Ridge is looking to write a bylaw to regulate recovery homes

Maple Ridge staff are creating some definitions for assisted living, community care, transitional housing and supportive recovery homes operating in the city.

Such homes will be required to have a business licence and a housing agreement, according to a report at council on Monday.

While the city wants to regulate the homes, there is also an “extreme need” in the city for such facilities.

There are currently about 30 recovery homes in Maple Ridge that are now unregulated, Coun. Gordy Robson said Monday.

Assisted living is where three or more adults are receiving hospitality services in a building that is on the assisted living registrar.

A community care facility is licenced by Fraser Health, however, and such homes with six residents or under don’t require municipal zoning.

Currently, there are six registered supportive recovery homes in Maple Ridge that are on the assisted living registrar. But there are others that are not registered because they don’t provide prescribed services involving the daily care of patients.

Three other cities already regulate supportive recovery homes. Surrey now limits the number of recovery homes in the city to 55 and requires each to have a business licence that involves creating a good neighour agreedment, consent of the property owner and a review of the applicant.
