A Pitt Meadows family was reunited with its beloved pet cockatiel after it escaped from their home on Tuesday.

Ruby usually has free-run of the house.

But when her owner John Clancy went outside on Tuesday, he did not notice that she had landed on the back of his hoodie.

When he sat down on a chair, Ruby took flight.

The bird circled about 100 metres in the air and then took off.

Ruby ended up flying more than 10 kilometres over the next 48 hours and, as luck would have it, land in the front yard of Maple Ridge veterinarian Adrian Walton, who specializes in birds and exotic animals.

As Walton was pulling into his driveway a group of children ran up to him and told him about a bird in a tree.

He immediately posted a video to his Facebook page asking if anyone was missing the exotic bird.

After tens of thousands of views and 1,000 shares the Clancys got in contact with Walton.

Ruby is now happy to be back at home but is now a little more cautious about going near windows.
