A former junior hockey player from Maple Ridge is the latest person charged in connection with the 2010 Stanley Cup riot.
Crown laid charges last Wednesday against Daniel Scott Amesbury, born Nov. 17, 1990.
He’s the 14th suspect to be charged out of 15 identified by police in the brutal swarming attack on Good Samaritan Robert Mackay, who tried to keep looters from breaking into The Bay during the riot.
Amesbury is charged with assault, participating in a riot, disguising his face to commit an offence, break and enter, and four counts of mischief.
Amesbury is a former member of the Ridge Meadows Flames junior B hockey team.
During the 2009-10 season, he had 368 penalty minutes in 45 games with the Flames. The following season, in 37 games with the Abbotsford Pilots, he had 413 penalty minutes – a Pacific Junior Hockey League record.
He was the league’s most penalized player both years and can be found online in numerous hockey fighting videos.
Amesbury, listed at 6’1’’ and 210 pounds, played 31 games last season with the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League, recording 113 penalty minutes and 15 fighting majors.
“He did play with us last season,” said Rob Loeber, broadcast and media relations with Tulsa. “We had no idea about any involvement with the riots.”
Loeber was not sure if Amesbury would be returning to the Oilers this coming season.
Amesbury also played two games with Columbus, Georgia in the Southern Professional Hockey League this past season, recording 21 penalty minutes.
He is among six men from Maple Ridge who are implicated in the riot.
Vancouver Police are seeking charges against another 27 suspected rioters. It’s the final bulk batch of charges VPD say they’re requesting related to the night of mayhem and violence more than two years ago in downtown Vancouver.
VPD Supt. Dean Robinsonsaid many charged and convicted rioters continue to ignore court-ordered conditions.
Random checks by investigators have found 28 in breach of conditions who have since been charged.
Thus far, police have sought a total of 1,204 charges against 352 rioters.
