A fire that started in a storage building at the back of a property on 210th Street in Maple Ridge was still smouldering at 9 a.m. on Monday

A large storage building in northwest Maple Ridge was destroyed by fire early Monday.

The blaze was called in around 1:40 a.m. by the homeowner, who discovered it in a building at the back of his house on 210th Street, just off 128th Avenue and Golden Ears Way.

At the height of the fire, a tower of flames shooting above the tree line could be seen from several kilometres away.

Fire chief Dane Spence said the fire was fully involved by the time crews arrived on scene.

"There was a large fire load," said Spence, explaining that the 1,500 square foot structure was packed with materials.

Style Craft Fibreglass is a business based on the property.

Spence said the building is a total loss.

The fire burned into the morning and crews brought in an excavator to dig through the smouldering rumble and put out hot spots.

Spence said the cause of the fire is unknown.
