Ten years after her murder, the final sentence in the death of Amanpreet Kaur Bahia was handed out in B.C. Supreme Court.
Surrey realtor Tanpreet Kaur Athwal was handed a life sentence with no parole for 25 years on Saturday, Nov. 25th at B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.
Her sentence is the final one to be handed out after two others were charged in relation to Bahia’s death last year.
Bahia’s husband, Baljinder Singh Bahia and hired hitman Eduard Viktorovitch Baranec were previously handed life sentences with no parole for 25 years on Oct. 8th, 2016.
On Feb. 7th, 2007, Bahia was found dead in the basement of her home near 125th Street and 58th Avenue. She had been stabbed, her throat was slashed, and she was lying in a pool of blood.
Two of her daughters, one of whom was a one-year-old at the time, were alone in the house with Bahia’s body for upwards of three hours until in-laws living at the house came home and discovered the body.
The case went unsolved until undercover RCMP in Saskatchewan spoke to Baranec in 2011, where he revealed his role in the murder, along with his connection to Athwal.
Evidence from the Crown showed that the hitman was paid $15,000 to carry out the murder.
More than ten years after the murder was carried out, all three of the individuals involved will spend the next 25 years behind bars.
