Value Village clerk helps nab suspected thief in Maple Ridge

An alert store clerk helped police catch a man caught shoplifting at a Maple Ridge second-hand store.

The 37-year-old was seen walking out of the Value Village on 207th Street around 7 p.m. with merchandise he did not pay for.

The clerk continued to watch the man, who got into a pickup truck and drove off.

The clerk noted the licence plate of the truck and called police.

A police officer on patrol located the truck in the 21800 block of Lougheed Highway, stopped it and arrested the driver.

Items stolen from the store were found. Police said the repeat-offender was held in custody for a first appearance in court on Thursday.

Teen arrested

A 15-year-old boy was arrested by police in Pitt Meadows on Wednesday for violating a probation order by smoking pot and drinking with his friends.

Police were called to a construction site in the 12000 block of Harris Road around 6:20 p.m. to investigate a complaint about three teens inside the fenced area.

The trio were drinking alcohol when officers arrived on scene and also admitted to smoking marijuana.

Police checks revealed one of the teens, from Port Coquitlam, had outstanding warrants and a probation order that prohibited him from consuming alcohol or illegal drugs.

The teen was held in police custody overnight for a court appearance on Thursday .

 

Always on alert

An off-duty officer of the New Westminster Police Department help Mounties catch a car thief early Wednesday.

Just after 2:30 a.m., the New Westminster police officer saw a suspicious vehicle on Thorne Avenue, near Warsely Street in Maple Ridge.

The officer called Ridge Meadows RCMP who followed the car to Golf Lane, where it was stopped.

Police quickly learned the car had been reported stolen and a 31-year-old Maple Ridge man was arrested without incident.

 

Wire theft

Wire worth $30,000 was stolen early Tuesday from a house under construction in east Maple Ridge.

The theft happened sometime between midnight and 8 a.m. at the property on Balsam Street near Fern Crescent.

Thieves entered the home by cutting a security lock and chain from the front doors and exited through a rear window.

 

Gas station robbery

Cigarettes were stolen early Monday during a brazen robbery at a Maple Ridge gas station.

The theft happened just before 6 a.m. at a Petro Canada in the 20300 block of Dewdney Trunk Road.

A man walked into the store, jumped over the counter, pushed the clerk aside and took several packages of cigarettes before fleeing.

The clerk was not injured during the theft.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 30s, 5-3 with a medium build, light blonde hair who was wearing a brown jacket with blue jeans and white runners.

 

Pot bust

Guns and more than 100 marijuana plants were seized early Monday after police executed a search warrant at a Maple Ridge home.

Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit and Marijuana Enforcement Team entered the property on 203rd Street around 8 a.m.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at the home and police also seized two firearms, 128 pot plants and a trailer that was used to grow them.

The man was released from police custody after the search on a promise to appear in court in May.

 

Subway robbery

Cash was stolen from a Maple Ridge Subway restaurant during a robbery early Monday.

A man walked into the store in the 20500 block of the Lougheed Highway around 6:25 a.m. and demanded money from the clerk.

He received an undisclosed amount of cash before running out.

He is described as a white man around 5-7 who was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with a Maple leaf on the hood.

Two weeks ago, a Subway store in Pitt Meadows was targeted in a similar theft.
