On March 30, 2017 Alan drifted away Predeceased by his parents Les and Phillis Baker, And by Daughter in law Stacy (Mohl) Baker. Alan was born in New Westminster on February 21, 1940. Growing up on the banks of the Fraser River in Albion BC, with his sisters Betty, Joanne and Judy, Alan was destined to become a fisherman like his father and his father before him. And at that, he made his mark. His skill, ingenuity, timing and his drive made him well known and respected on the coast of British Columbia and on the Fraser River. As well as being a true high line fisherman he would also be one of the pioneers of the herring fishery on the coast of B.C. In the off season or between fisheries he would run tug boats on the Fraser. In 1979 he started and partially funded the Albion test fishery that would contribute scientific data on Chum salmon. Then in 1981 he would start the Chinook Test fishery. He provided daily samples and reports on these and other species and river conditions to the department of fisheries and oceans in an effort to bolster the fish stocks for future generations. The Albion test fishery is still in operation today. Alan could usually be found on the river fishing, mending nets, fixing boats or offering to help someone. He was an extremely generous man to friends and strangers alike. Alan was always seeking knowledge and he loved to share his knowledge. He would often be heard telling stories about his mentors, old friends or family that had gone before us and the things they did ’back when’. Stories of hunting, playing baseball, the flood of ‘48’ or fishing trips of note. But he wasn’t stuck in the past. He was always looking forward to something. After many years of work he decided to retire to spend his last years with the love of his life, Ruth, (nee Morrisette) his wife of 53 years. He also loved his kids, (Cindy, Roger and Grant). If he wasn’t at the river you could likely find him working the hobby farm that Alan and Ruth made on their property. When he wasn’t working at something, he loved to watch baseball, hockey or football, and in a perfect world, eating lemon meringue pie too. Thanks to his loving wife, his world was often perfect. He really loved his grandkids and would brag about all their wonderful qualities. He was so proud of Tyler, Dusty, Samantha, Alysha and Jake and they love grandpa still. We will remember him often, cherish his virtues and miss him always. A celebration of life to be announced at a later date.
