FAIRWEATHER, Geraldine (Gerry)

Feb 7, 1933 – Aug 21, 2010

Gerry passed away peacefully at Pleasant View Extended Care Home in Mission surrounded by members of her family. Born in New Westminster, the younger daughter of Mansell and Jess Overand, Gerry was predeceased by her high school sweetheart and husband of 49 years, Raymond. Gerry has missed Ray terribly these past five and a half years, and they have been re-united again, one day after what would have been their 55th wedding anniversary. Gerry is survived by her loving family, sons Bruce (Cheryl), Brent (Leah), Jamie and daughter Janet (Mark). Grandchildren who will miss her tremendously are Chelsea, Courtney, Adam (Yvette), Colin (Megan), Owen, Tommy, Holly, Jaime and Austin. Gerry is also survived by her sister Jacquie Nelson (Dick), sister-in laws Ann Banford, Isobel Fairweather, Pat Fairweather, Irene Fairweather, brothers–in law Allan Fairweather and Doug Fairweather. Gerry will also be fondly remembered by all her nieces and nephews and all her close friends in the “Girls Group”. Gerry had fought a courageous battle against many debilitating ailments over the past number of years. Her spirit remained strong, but the time had come to be pain free and peaceful again.

Gerry was raised in New Westminster, where she graduated from High School and completed Normal School, receiving her Teaching Certificate. Gerry obtained her first teaching position at Como Lake High School in Coquitlam in 1955. She taught briefly before the children started to arrive, going back to Substitute Teaching later on in life in the Coquitlam and Maple Ridge School Districts. Gerry was a very kind and loving mother who guided and nurtured her children during their perilous path to adulthood. Gerry was a true homebody, never really wanting to leave their “Fairweather Haven” on Alouette River in Maple Ridge, their home for 27 years. She was an avid gardener, loved to entertain in their home, was a devoted foster parent, and served on various municipal committees in Coquitlam and Maple Ridge. Gerry also “mothered” her many dogs and cats throughout the years. Gerry was an active member of the Hammond United Church in Maple Ridge for many years. A service will be held at Hammond United Church - 11391 Dartford Street, Maple Ridge at 12:00 pm. - Saturday, August 28, 2010. Luncheon will follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
