HELMUS ~ Hendrik Jacob

May 11, 1927 ~ October 12, 2008

Early in the morning of Sunday, October 12, Henk Helmus peacefully slipped into the hands of his Lord and Saviour, surrounded by his loving family during the last days of his life at McKenney Creek Hospice in Maple Ridge. He will be greatly missed by his loving and devoted wife of more than 55 years, Martje, and their three sons, Bill (Anne), Martin, Peter (Beverley), their grandchildren (Diana, Sean, Jonathan, Ryan, Jeffrey, Christopher, Amelia) and great-grandchildren (Marshall, Adam).

Henk was predeceased by two brothers (Marinus and Jaap) and is survived by one older sister (Janna) and two younger brothers (Willie and Piet), all in the Netherlands. Henk and Martje were both born in Groningen, the Netherlands. In 1953, they married and immigrated to Canada, settling in Maple Ridge in 1959, where they lived for nearly 50 years. Henk worked as a marine machinist for several years on ships in the Canadian Arctic in the 1960’s, and completed his working career as a millwright for many years at Whonnock Lumber Mill in Maple Ridge.

We will celebrate and remember Henk’s life at the funeral service to be held on Monday, October 20 at 1:00 pm at Maple Ridge Christian Reformed Church, 20245 Dewdney Trunk Road.

“The Lord gives and the Lord

takes away, blessed be

the name of the Lord”.

We would like to thank the staff at McKenney Creek for their tender care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Henk’s memory to McKenney Creek Hospice, Maple Ridge.
