Dear Editor,

Maple Ridge needs a comprehensive, high-level plan to guide its future growth.

This plan has to take into account our significant population growth, environmental considerations, and the evolving needs of our community in terms of lifestyle, education, and well-being.

If Maple Ridge aspires to host major events such as the upcoming BC Games or other sports competitions, adequate hotel accommodations will be essential. Similarly, if there are ambitions to establish a post-secondary institution or attract light industry and businesses to the area, a strategic plan is imperative.

It is worth noting that the Official Community Plan (OCP) of Maple Ridge has not undergone a comprehensive review in over 15 years. During this time, numerous changes have occurred that have impacted the trajectory of our city’s growth.

While the city makes periodic updates, they seem to fall short of capturing the overarching vision of what Maple Ridge aims to become. I would ask, what is that vision? It is concerning that Maple Ridge residents bear a higher tax rate (3.6932) compared to Pitt Meadows (3.64760), a city that boasts impressive recreational facilities, hotels, and shopping options people want in our community.

Addressing these issues and re-evaluating the OCP could foster a more prosperous and vibrant future for Maple Ridge. City Planning and community members need to collaborate on shaping a sustainable and inclusive plan that reflects the aspirations and needs of the residents. No more piecemeal edits to the OCP. Let’s get together and imagine our Maple Ridge in 5 years.
