Letters: ‘Train whistles part of Canada’

Our family was both stunned and surprised to read about residents of a local condo building signing a petition and urging city council to have the trains that pass through there to stop blowing their whistles

This stop at the Haney wharf has been used for years by CP and is one of only two West Coast Express stops in Maple Ridge.

We also live close to a train crossing in Maple Ridge, but love the sound of the train whistles. To us, this is a huge part of Canada. Most of our commerce moves by train across this huge nation. Trains and their whistles are part of our heritage.

The Haney wharf stop for the commuter train and CP goods has been operating here for many years, while these newer condo buildings across the street have only been here for two or three years.

All of the residents must have known when they bought their condos that they were very close to a train station.

I think the trains should continue to blow their horns, and residents should just learn to deal with the noise.

This is similar to people buying a home or property near an airport or along the flight path of one, then turning around and complaining of aircraft noise after they buy and move there.

As far as we are concerned, if you don’t like the train noise, then move.
