Fletcher rink takes GEWC fall session title

staff reporter

Lorne Fletcher’s rink won the Golden Ears Winter Club’s Haney Masters Curling League fall session title and will be competing in the Fraser Valley Masters Interclub Championships in Langley this week.

Led by Stan Melanson at lead, second Barry Elson, and Hilly Boonstra at third, the Fletcher rink will represent the Haney Masters in the Zone 2 Championship.

The Haney Masters will also be competing in Pacific Coast Masters Championships in Cloverdale, Feb. 6 to 9. A rink consisting of Fletcher at skip, third Boonstra, Gregg Hook at second, and lead Chris Martin, will compete for the Guy Philip trophy for curlers 60 and older.

The Haney Masters Curling League began its spring session draw last week with 11 rinks participating.

The Masters’ league consists of players 55 and older and play every Monday and Wednesday morning.

The league is designed to allow curlers to continue to compete at a high level of competition, to enjoy the socialization of the sport, and  to encourage participation by those who have been absent from curling for a number of years or for those who are simply new to curling.

Ages range from 55 to 80 and beyond, with past champions Bill Hanula, William Gardner, George Lagerstrom and Al Herd representing Golden Ears in the over 80s tournament.

Teams are selected by the board for the fall session and a new team is selected by the skips for the spring session, allowing anyone interested in playing to not have to form their own rink.

Anyone interested in joining can contact Wayne Chin at 604-313-6898 or email waynepm@telus.net.
