Stewart garners All-American status

Six-foot-two right-hander Devon Stewart is named 2012 MAAC’s rookie of the year as well as an All American.

Devon Stewart’s stock continues to rise as the Canisius College right-hander has been named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

The honour comes on top of Stewart being named the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year.

Stewart was the only player from the MAAC to earn Freshman All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball.

The Maple Ridge pitcher made 15 starts during his freshman season, recording a 6-4 record with a 3.80 earned run average in 94.2 innings pitched.

Stewart’s innings pitched are the most ever by a rookie pitcher at Canisius College. Stewart also had three complete games in 2012.

Pitching in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Stewart led all divisional freshman in ERA, innings pitched, starts, and strikeouts, with 60. He was tied for the most wins. He and teammate Billy Martin were the only two pitchers in the MAAC to make 15 starts in the season.

Equally impressive was Stewart’s ability to go deep into his starts. Twelve of his appearances were considered quality starts, going more than six innings. He allowed three runs or fewer in 11 starts.

Stewart’s season culminated with a pair of big-game wins. He recorded the win in the  2012 MAAC championship game, lasting eight innings  in a 10-3 victory over Rider University. The 6-foot-2 righty allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out seven

Other highlights included  a seven-inning shutout of Iona College, allowing one Gael to reach third base. Stewart retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced and recorded a first-pitch strike to 20 of the 27 batters he faced. Stewart also had nine strikeouts against Penn State, the most by a Golden Griffin freshman since the 2000 season.
