Maple Ridge golfer wins junior tour event

There was a local winner as more than 110 kids competed in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour event at Swaneset Bay Resort in Pitt Meadows over the weekend.

The MJT Ford Series and West Coast Ford Lincoln Go Golf! junior clinic were both held, and elite players were competing for titles in seven age divisions on Canada’s number-one played junior golf tour.

The MJT girls 15-18 division winner was 18 year-old Esther Subin Lee of Maple Ridge. She fired great rounds of 76-72-148 to win by an impressive 11 strokes.

“It feels really good, because I have been working really hard on my game,” said Lee. “The course was in really good shape.”

Her score was the second best overall in the tournament.

Jordan Loyst of Pitt Meadows also had a good tourney, and he finished third in the junior boys division, as the 17-year-old shot rounds of 86-82-168.

The low overall and the MJT juvenile boys 15-16 title was won by Miguel Cullum, 15, of Coquitlam, after he shot 78-77-155 to win by three strokes over Peter Zhang, 16, of Surrey,

Both Cullum and Zhang are now shortlisted for the Nordic Junior Team Matches in Finland.

MJT veteran Evan Merrier, 18, of Surrey, won the junior boys 17-18 Hoselton trophy after he shot 81-85 -166 to edge fellow Surrey resident, Lucas Oh, by one.

The new MJT collegiate men 19-23 division was won by Tyler LeClair, 20, of North Vancouver (80-79-159), after he held off Sikander Kaleka of Spruce Grove, Alta. by one shot.

In bantam boys 13-14, the MJT champion by an amazing 12 strokes was Andy Luo, 14, of Burnaby, (70-72-142).

Justin Bjornson, 11, of Surrey, claimed his fourth MJT peewee boys 12 and under title, after he held off Ryan Vest, 10, of Vernon (74-79-153).

Angela Arora, 12, of Surrey, BC, shot solid scores of 80-79 -159 to win her second MJT girls U15 title this season, stating.

The next few Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stops in the province are the MJT Ford Series and the MJT Mini Tour at Hazelmere Golf Club in Surrey on June 10 and 11, followed by another MJT Mini Tour at Musqueam Golf Club in Vancouver on July 10.
