The one local high school track and field meet, the Nick Wilkes Memorial, was hosted by Maple Ridge Secondary on Thursday, and saw some great performances by local athletes.

Pitt Meadows coach Lance Kraus has a large team of about 80 mostly young athletes, and they had a serious medal haul.

Long jumper Vlad Moldanonov set a new school record in winning the long jump, and the leaper also went on to take the high jump gold. He is a favourite to win a medal at the provincial championships this year.

Jacob Gowler won the javelin, and also took second in the 100m race.

Olivia Moriconi is a thrower who won the discus and shot put events, and would likely have won the hammer throw if it was held on the day.

Grade 8 Liam Foster won the 3,000 m steeplechase event by a large margin.

The fleet Pitt senior boys relays finished in first, second and fifth places in the 4x100 meter race.

The second largest team was that of the host Ramblers. Grade 9 Abisayo Ajibike took second in 100 m sprint, as did Grade 10 Claire Liversidge. Senior Liam Watt took third.

Grade 8 Aimee Milliard was bronze in the 400m. Grade 9 Nicholas Cowley was third in that event, and Grade 9 Ryan Ibbitt won it. Cowley also took second in the javelin.

Grade 8 Elise Carelse and Grade 10 Rosie Elphick both won the 100m races.

Grade 10s Natalie Rycroft took second in the high jump, and Emily Murray third.

Payten Smith won the senior girls shotput, and Monique Lisek won the senior girls 400m.

The Meadowridge team had Grade 8 Om Vora take second in the discus.

Grade 8 Richard Laurie won the discus, Grade nine Ellie Dockerty finished third in the high jump, and Thomas Laurie placed second in high jump.

Grade 10 Madysen McNeil of SRT won the 1,500m race.

The B.C. high school track and field championships, which have traditionally been held at Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium, will instead be contested at Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park in both 2013 and 2014.

They were held at Swangard from 1975 to 1993, in Coquitlam from 1994 to 1999, and then back at Swangard from 2000 to 2012.

The two-day meet, which features thousands of competitors, will be held May 31 and June 1.
