Organizers of a coming Chilliwack car show are looking for more classic vehicles to fill the grounds of the University of the Fraser Valley in June, and it’s all for a good cause.
The Fraser Valley Classic Car Show, put on by members of the Fraser Valley British Motor Club, takes place on Sunday, June 9 at the UFV Chilliwack campus, and it’s a fundraiser for Chilliwack General Hospital via the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation.
“It’s a worthwhile cause. We’re looking for more entries, more cars,” Bruce Webster said. “The only requirement is it be collector-eligible; it does not have to have collector plates.”
Vehicles must be 25 years or older, and although the show is put on by collectors of vintage British cars, other vehicles are allowed, including motorcycles.
“We opened the event up two years ago to American cars and we had a fair number of classic hot rods (modified vehicles),” Webster said.
The show has been around for about 35 years. Initially located at the former grounds of Minter Gardens, the Fraser Valley Classic Car Show moved to the Atchelitz Threshermen’s Association site beside Chilliwack Heritage Park about 10 years ago. In 2019, it found a new home at the UFV Chilliwack campus where vehicles are on display in a large, grassy picnic area to the west of Dieppe Street.
In the past they’ve had upwards of 120 entries.
Online pre-registration of vehicles is highly recommended and the cost is $20. Car owners can register in-person on the day of, but the fee will be higher.
It is free admission for the public to see the cars, but they are asking for donations to the FVHCF.
In addition to registration fees and donations, they’re bringing in increased revenue for the hospital by way of silent auction and car raffle.
A member of the Fraser Valley British Motor Club donated a yellow 1962 MGB – valued at $9,500 – which will be raffled off on June 9. Tickets can only be purchased online and 3,600 tickets are available for sale. During the car show, people can also bid on a handmade wooden table (also donated by a car club member) during the silent auction.
Additionally, members of the public and exhibitors will each get a ticket for a chance to win some of the 25 door prizes, plus everyone will get a ballot and have a chance to vote for their favourite car. The winner of the people’s choice category will get a prize, plus there will be prizes for each car class: pre-1940s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and modified.
The Sardis drumline from Sardis Secondary School will perform that day and food trucks will be on site.
Drivers of registered vehicles can enter the car show site at the corner of Dieppe Street and Petawawa Road between 7:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.
A portion of Vimy Drive will be closed, and free parking is available in lot #7 located on the south side of Caen Avenue, west of Dieppe Street.
UFV and the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation have partnered with members of the Fraser Valley British Motor Club to make the event possible. Chilliwack Search and Rescue will have a display at the show.
The Fraser Valley Classic Car Show is set for Sunday, June 9 and it starts at 10 a.m. The raffle draw for the yellow MGB will take place at 3 p.m. that day, and door prizes will be drawn throughout the day.
For more info, including to register a vehicle, and to purchase raffle tickets for the MGB, go to fvccs.ca. Tax receipts can be issued to those who make a donation of more than $20 to the health care foundation.
