Metro Vancouver has a new top bureaucrat after a four-month search.

The regional district has picked Carol Mason, currently chief administrative officer of the Nanaimo Regional District, to take over as CAO here in September.

She replaces veteran Metro Vancouver CAO Johnny Carline, who retired in February.

The CAO is paid $270,000 a year, reports to the Metro board of directors and leads 1,500 employees in providing regional services such as water, sewage, solid waste management and regional parks.

Mason, who has held senior municipal management positions in Nanaimo, holds an M.B.A. from UBC and a senior certificate in municipal administration.

Metro vice-chair Raymond Louie said she was picked from a field of highly qualified applicants after a rigorous recruitment process and cited Mason's record of finding collaborative solutions to complex issues involving a wide range of stakeholders.
