For the first time since 2009, Pitt Meadows Regional Airport is hosting an aerobatic airshow that is free to the public.
Sunday, July 20, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Pitt Meadows skies will be filled with a dozen aerobatic acts including local aerobatic pilot Super Dave in his MX2 and wingwalker Carol Pilon.
Jumpers from Skydive the City, based at the airport, will be part of the opening act.
The airshow is being organized by the newly formed North Fraser Airshow Society and is part of the airport’s annual Airport Day that starts an hour earlier.
Everything from educational booths and hot air balloon rides to aircraft, car and motorcycle displays will be on the day’s agenda.
Society director Kris Grasty emphasizes the event is free but donations will be welcomed at the gate as they help the society pay for the show as well as the youth scholarships they offer.
Volunteers to help with the event would also be welcomed as work still needs to be done and the day is getting close.
“We need about 20 to 30 adult volunteers,” estimates Grasty.
Led by society volunteers, the community volunteer group will mostly look after parking direction on the day.

Grasty says his society thought it appropriate to keep the airshow, a first for his group, free as it was an opportunity to “build a namesake” and educate other Lower Mainland residents the Pitt Meadows airport exists.
“A lot of people don’t even know that airport is there.”
