Five deserving Grade 12 students in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have received scholarships from the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Arts Council.

The $1,000 scholarships can be used at any accredited post-secondary institution to support their continued education.

The students were chosen from 18 applications sent in by students from across the school district.

“Winning the scholarship for literary arts is truly a dream come true,” said Maple Ridge secondary student Laura Thornton.

“This award not only affirms that I have made the right choice of my area of study - creative writing - but helps me to have the chance to go out and pursue it in my university studies.”

Pitt Meadows secondary student Emilie Voigt will be using the scholarship to continue training as a professional ballet dancer.

“It means so much to me to have the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Arts Council recognise my dance,” she added.

“ I find this scholarship more gratifying because, not only for the support it will give me in my education,  but because it presented me with lots of self confidence and also a chance for my art work to be seen by other people,” said Yuri Won, who is graduating from Samuel Robertson secondary.

Derek Maroney will be using his scholarship award to pursue music.

“I am honoured to have been selected for this award in music, as pursuing this passion is very important to me,” he said.

“Thank you for providing this generous financial aid; it will definitely assist me as I transition into post-secondary music education.”

Kia Newton also thanked the council for the award.

“It is with much gratitude and honor that I receive this technical theater award,” said Newton. “It will surely be of aid to me in my upcoming years of art-business focused post secondary education.”

Since 2005, the arts council has provided over $45,000 in support to students from the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District.
