B.C. Lions treat family of late mother to CFL game

A Maple Ridge family whose mother died two month after being hit by a truck while trying to save her youngest son was treated to a B.C. Lions game on Saturday.

Kelly Sandoval passed away in March, almost two months after she was hit by a truck that rampaged through a Maple Ridge mall parking lot. She had pushed her son out of the truck’s path, but was pinned by the black pickup against a fence.

Sandoval left behind her husband Eddie and four sons – then 16, 13, 10, and five years old.

Sandoval did a lot for her family, helping the school PAC, walking her kids to school, taking them to soccer, basketball and football practices.

Holly Murton of the Kiwanis Club of Golden Ears got together with Greg Turnbull of Operation Metamorphosis and the B.C. Lions of the CFL. They arranged for Eddie and his family to attend a B.C. Lions game.

Murton said the eldest boy, Tyson, is a wide receiver with the Ridge Meadows Knights Football.

This day was very special for him, Murton added.

After a picnic by Science World, the family attended a pre-game practice at field level in B.C. Place.

The Lions trailed in the game 17-0 at halftime, but fought back in the second half and won 20-17, kicking a field goal with five seconds left.
