A three-on-three ball hockey tournament starts at 9 a.m. in Pitt Meadows Spirit Square on Canada Day.

The City of Pitt Meadows celebrates its centennial this year and promises Canada Day will be a party of the century.

“Come down and join in the festivities,” said Coun. Dave Murray Tuesday, reminding residents that a packed day of fun kicks off at 8 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. in Spirit Square.

This year’s festival will begin with a pancake breakfast cooked up by Pitt Meadows Lions Club. Work off the calories by signing up for Athletes in Kind’s annual charity run or shoot a ball with volunteers from Pitt Meadows Community Association during a three-on-three hockey tournament.

The Lions will serve pancakes, sausages and juice for $4 – cash only.

Spirit Square will be the centre of activity with booths featuring arts, crafts and games.

Don a period costume and snap a picture at the centennial photo booth.

Live entertainment begins at noon with bluegrass band Five On A String.

The Hockey Day tournaments will require pre-registration. If people do not have a prearranged team, there will be the option of dropping in, and joining in with incomplete teams of players of the same birth year.

To register email hockeyday@gmail.com, with the subject: Hockey Day Registration

It costs $5 per player, payable upon check-in. All proceeds go to support a local child to play hockey.

The eight kilometre run begins and ends at Spirit Square. The route follows Harris Road to Hammond Road, then turns onto Blakely Road, continues down Bonson Road to the dike and loops back up Harris Road. There will be water stations along the way. Register online. Late registration on the day of the run is $50.

Pitt Meadows is almost half a century younger than Canada, which marks 147 years since confederation this year.
