A celebration of Black culture is coming to Maple Ridge.
Inyanga, a Black cultural showcase, is being put on by Afro Gala Productions, an organization whose mission is to: help showcase and promote Black and African cultural heritage; to unite Blacks and Africans of all nationalities to build identity; to promote inter-cultural and racial relationships; to promote a welcoming, tolerant, diverse, open minded, and supportive community; and to create a socially active, fun-filled environment where youth and others feel empowered.
Every year the organization hosts the Afro Gala, where they use the opportunity to recognize and honour people who have contributed to the development of the Black community as part of their celebration of Black History Month.
Afro Gala Productions was founded in 2016 by Maple Ridge residents Linda Dozie, and City Councillor Onyeka Dozie – whom, their website says, are both passionate about intercultural relations, youth empowerment and promotion of African culture.
Inyanga will be held at the bandstand in Memorial Peace Park from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2.
