Students at Maple Ridge elementary planted a dogwood tree on Wednesday. Planting the tree was part of an Earth Day assembly, which also marked the grand opening of the school’s community garden. More than 50 volunteers, as well as children and 15 school staff took part in a work party on April 2 to build the community garden. Six raised planting beds were created and an arbor was installed along with a large storage container. Seven blueberry bushes and six raspberry bushes were also planted. So far the students have planted spinach and lettuce in the raised beds and plan to seed for corn, pumpkins, peas and carrots.
