Uta, a female German shepherd has been missing for a week after going missing from the Maple Ridge branch of the BC SPCA.

The Maple Ridge BC SPCA have enlisted the help of Scent Rescue in the search for a dog who managed to escape the shelter last Wednesday.

Uta, a four-year-old, female German shepherd, went missing Nov. 6 after sneaking past an animal care attendant when she was let out for her morning bathroom break.

After a week of tracking Uta, Karen Nixon, with Scent Rescue, and her scent dog Halo, have narrowed the search to Thornhill, specifically around 248 Street, between 100 and 106 Avenues.

Halo, a white shepherd, is an expert in tracking lost pets, actually found Uta on Nov. 7 but Uta was not receptive and trotted off to a neighbouring property, explained Kahlee Demers with the animal shelter.

Posters have been put up and cameras have also been set up in the area, in addition to a humane trap.

"We set the trap for the first time last night and are hoping to have her soon," said Demers.

"We are asking the public to avoid the area if possible and for residents in the area to keep an eye on their sheds, greenhouses, and other spaces that a dog may feel safe in," she added.

Anyone who does discover Uta, are being asked not to approach, make eye contact, or to call the dog's name. Instead people are being asked to text or call 604-362-9145.

"She is very nervous, especially of new people and someone approaching her may push her out of her current area," explained Demers.
