A Drag Brunch fundraiser is taking place this weekend in support of gender and sexuality alliances in Maple Ridge high schools.
This is the second annual Drag Brunch at Golden Ears United Church.
When people enter the church, there will be a vibrant atmosphere, explained Rev. Leenane Shiels. Brunch will be served by a group of volunteers with the church and then the entertainment will start.
There will be three performers: Mz Adrien, the drag king Androgynass, and Jerianna.
"And it will be all ages appropriate material that they will be doing," the minister said.
Last year they had a great turnout, Shiels noted, including families with LGBTQ+ children, who found it reaffirming to be in the space.
"You can have family-friendly drag. I think there's a misperception out in the world that drag is dangerous, that drag and trans-folks are recruiting children or grooming children, there's terrible language that's used," said Minister Shiels
However, she said, they found the positive effects of event last year, "grossly outweighed any of the negative attention that we received."
Doors open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 22165 Dewdney Trunk Road.
Drag Brunch is being presented by the Golden Ears United Church Affirm Team.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for teens, and children under 9 years are free.
