Families say cheese at Help Portrait in Maple Ridge

More than 150 people turned out for the event

Guests streamed into Golden Ears United Church on Sunday for festive family photos.

More than 150 people came out for the annual Help Portrait event, held Sunday, Dec. 8.

Photographers, hair and makeup artists, editors, and others who donated their time on Sunday, Dec. 8, joined forces to create professional family portraits for those who might not otherwise be able to afford one.

There were lots of returning families and volunteers, said organizer Brenda Norrie.

They did have some new volunteers, including a man named Peter, who just moved to Maple Ridge, she added. Peter attended a church service that morning and then ended up volunteering with the group for the entire day.

"He even sang on stage," said Norrie.

This year people had the option to preregister for a sitting, and Norrie noted, about half of the families did. Next year, she is expecting even more guests to preregister.

Prior to the official portrait guests received a free mini-makeover, there was a children's craft station, and live music.

The Salvation Army Ridge Meadows Ministries helped out with food.

Every family left with a framed print.

Norrie said they couldn't put the event on without the support of local donors.

Next year they are hoping to have more hair and makeup volunteers.
