Local Girl Guides will be out hauling wagons for the Pitt Meadows Day Parade on Saturday, June 7, in the hopes of filling them up with food for those in need.
Members of the 3rd Pitt Meadows Sparks and Embers, have been busy decorating 20 wagons in colourful colours to collect the non-perishable food items which will be going to the Friends In Need Food Bank.
The initiative began after the District Commissioner and Spark and Ember volunteer, Tanya Harrison noticed how few donations were collected during last year’s parade.
Determined to make a change, she reached out to Evan Seal, general manager of the Friends in Need, to see if they would accept help from the Girl Guides.
Building on the success of a Girl Guides World Thinking Day event on Feb. 22, when district guides collected an impressive 250 pounds of food, they are stepping up again to collect as much as they can.
“This is about more than just collecting food,” said Harrison.
“It’s about teaching young girls to recognize the needs in their communities and empowering them to take action. We want them to grow up with compassion and the confidence to make a difference,” Harrison explained.
Residents are encouraged to participate by bringing non-perishable food items to the parade.
"The Girl Guides will be easy to spot — look for their signature uniforms and the colourful wagons rolling alongside them," added Harrison.
"Bring your cans, lend a hand! Your donation could help a local family in need — and inspire the next generation of community leaders."
The 84th Annual Pitt Meadows Day, takes place Saturday, June 7, with the parade beginning at noon and festivities running all day long at Pitt Meadows Athletic Park.
