Join the District of Maple Ridge and City of Pitt Meadows in a fight against global warming tomorrow by participating in Earth Hour 2011 –This Earth Hour, go beyond the hour.

You too can do your part by turning off the lights in your home or apartment for one hour on Saturday, March 26 at 8:30 p.m.

Earth Hour is a one hour “lights out” event, created by the World Wildlife Fund that mobilizes millions worldwide to show support for action on climate change.

Earth Hour is designed to show people how they can be part of the climate solution and that every day actions can add up to make a real difference.

Both municipalities are participating in the event by turning off all lights at their city halls as part of a commitment to reducing energy consumption and achieving carbon neutrality.

During Earth Hour 2010, Maple Ridge reduced electricity consumption by 0.8 per cent. In Pitt Meadows, the power savings was 1.3 per cent.

If Earth Hour happened every night, B.C. Hydro could save enough electricity to power 2,200 homes for a year.

In electrical terms, the 2010 Earth Hour in B.C. saved 64 megawatt hours of power, equal to turning off 1.4 million lights.
