New types of collections go far beyond the books.

Libraries aren’t just about books anymore.

There is a new trend in public library lending called the Library of Things.

The Library of Things describes non-traditional collections that are loaned by libraries, and can include tools, electronics, toys and games, art, science kits, craft supplies, musical instruments, and more.

These new types of collections vary widely, but go far beyond the books, journals and media that have been the primary focus of library collections in the past.

The Playground at Fraser Valley Regional Library FVRL takes this concept one step further to offer customers of all ages free access to fun and engaging STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) related learning experiences. The Playground features both borrowing collections and in-library experiences.

Popular items currently available for loan from FVRL include Sphero SPRK+ (programmable robots) and ukuleles. In addition, FVRL will launch telescope lending in April. Each loaned item comes with instructions to assist library customers in using the borrowed object.

FVRL also uses the ukuleles, Sphero SPRK+ and telescopes, as well as Green Screens, KEVA Planks, Makey Makeys and Virtual Reality equipment, to provide engaging and interactive programs throughout the library system.

Kids can check out some of these Playground items, like Makey Makeys and KEVA Planks, at the Build and Create – Make Something Great program on Tuesday, March 13, 3:30-5 p.m. Teens and adults of all experience levels can stop by the monthly drop-in Ukulele Circle on the last Sunday of each month, from 2-4 p.m.

Meanwhile, with spring break just around the corner, come check out our wide array of awesome free children’s programs, including the Springtime Tales Puppet Show on March 13, Reading Rocks drop-in art program on March 14, Toddler Dance Party on March 21 and the amazing Juno-nominated Team T and J on March 22.
