Hospice society hosts Healing Steps walks in Maple Ridge

Healing Steps is for anyone dealing with the grief of a loved one

Grieving the loss of loved one is a difficult thing to do by oneself.

And, not everyone processes grief in the same way.

That is why the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society has started a program called Healing Steps, a program where someone dealing with grief can walk alongside others going through the same thing.

"Not everyone finds value in sitting and talking. Some people may prefer physical activity to connect with their grief and find healing," explained hospice executive director Lindsey Willis.

The group meets every Tuesday just before 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Kanaka Creek Regional Park Fraser River, on River Road, just east of the east end of the Haney Bypass.

Last Tuesday, March 4, only three people took part on the walk.

Typically, thought, they would have a group of 8 to 10 take part, said Willis.

Willis said there is lots of room in the group for additional people and if the group grows she will make sure there are additional grief support volunteers to support all participants.

"This grief group offers a way to move through grief while being physically active and emotionally supported, leading to a sense of connection and reduced feelings of isolation," added Willis.

The program runs rain or shine so people should dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.
