Hot long weekend crowds beach, campsites

Hot summer weather saw vacationers flock to Golden Ears Provincial Park for the August long weekend.

Hot summer weather saw vacationers flock to Golden Ears Provincial Park for the August long weekend.

The local park is the busiest in the provincial parks system, but despite every campsite and parking spot being full, there was little trouble for the parks operators last weekend.

“We had no police incidents,” said park manager Stu Burgess.

“We had some people having a bit too much fun some nights, but other than that,  everyone behaved themselves.”

The park’s 409 campsites at Alouette, North Beach, and Gold Creek campgrounds were each full by Wednesday as campers opted to get a head start on the weekend, Burgess said.

The parks day-use area at Alouette Lake had to be briefly shut down Saturday, Sunday, and Monday as the park’s 800 parking spaces were full. Burgess estimated there were close to 2,300 people on the beach each day.

“It was a perfect summer weekend for us,” he said.

“Hopefully we can get this weather to continue.”
