Indigenous take on hit musical Grease hits the stage in Maple Ridge

Bear Grease fuses Doo Wop, Hip-Hop, and Pow Wow styles with Indigenous fashion, history, and humour

An Indigenous take on a hit musical from the 1970s is coming to the ACT Arts Centre in Maple Ridge.

'Bear Grease', also the name of a sacred Indigenous medicine, is a comical twist on 'Grease', which will take the audience on a joyride through a parallel universe where colonization never existed.

Although the production has stayed true to some aspects of the original musical, other elements have been given cultural flair like Sandy, who wears a ribbon skirt, the Pink Ladies are now the Pink Aunties, Rizzo is now Rezzo, and Summer Lovin' is now Summer Snaggin'.

"'Bear Grease' cleverly fuses Doo Wop, Hip-Hop, and Pow Wow styles with Indigenous fashion, history, and humour, and makes each show reflective of the community it is performed in," reads a description online.

"It’s not the 'Grease' you expect to see, it’s the 'Grease' you need to see."

'Bear Grease', by LightningCloud Productions, will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Mainstage Theatre at the ACT Arts Centre, 11944 Haney Place, Maple Ridge.

The show runs around 75 minutes.

Tickets range from $32.50 to $45, plus fees.
