Kid Cupid strikes again – for the third year in a row.
Suhaandeep Gill, 9, has completed his annual Valentine’s Day giveaway, this time making and delivering almost 300 samosas to emergency shelters in Abbotsford, Mission and Maple Ridge.
Suhaandeep and his family – including his brothers Rehaandeep, 6, and Devendeep, nine months – made the samosas at home and distributed them on Wednesday and Thursday (Feb. 12 and 13) to Cyrus Centre in Abbotsford, Haven in the Hollow in Mission, and the Salvation Army in Maple Ridge.
Also helping out with the project were his mom Sandy, dad Sukhdeep, grandmother, grandfather, auntie and uncle.
Every person received two samosas with chutney sauce. As well, the family made 140 individual boxes of rice with vegetables, and donated juice boxes, fruit pouches and chocolates.
The family also prepared bags containing lotion, toothbrushes, shampoo, socks and deodorant for Cyrus Centre.
“I feel like I am making a difference, and I am so excited that they can feel happy and full of joy inside their heart, especially around Valentine’s Day when that is the most loving day of the year,” Suhaandeep said.
This is the third year that he has participated in a Valentine’s initiative. In 2023, he made a New Year’s resolution to help people in his community.
The Grade 4 student lives in both Abbotsford and Mission, and attends school in Maple Ridge.
Last year, Suhaandeep and his family prepared pancakes with blueberry jam, mixed fruits and chocolates, all packaged in individual boxes topped with a bow.
They also added juice boxes and delivered boxes of cheese pizza.
In 2023, they prepared Valentine’s Day-themed gift bags filled with toiletry items, notebooks, pens, socks and candies.
The family also delivers treats and food every month to local food banks, as well as regularly providing meals to the unhoused population.
“I feel like we are doing a good job in raising our sons in the right direction and teaching them to be kind, polite, respectful, helpful and, more importantly, being good human beings,” Sandy said.
She said the brothers will continue the Valentine’s Day initiative in the future.
“Suhaandeep mentioned he hopes to do it different every year – to not cook or make the same things every year,” Sandy said.
“He hopes next year will be bigger, better and special to those in need.”
