Learn about building a stronger community

Seattle authour talks in Maple Ridge

Working together makes it easier to get through tough times, and a Seattle author will be in Maple Ridge on Monday to explain how to do that.

Jim Diers, author Neighbor Power: Building Community the Seattle Way, speaks in Maple Ridge council chambers from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Diers was in town to give a presentation to Maple Ridge staff, but the district also wanted the general public to hear what he had to say, so the meeting is open to everyone, individuals and community groups.

According to Diers: “Neighbors can generate tremendous power when they come together as a community.

They can influence the actions of government, developers, and other external forces. They can also mobilize their own assets – their passion, knowledge, skills, and relationships – in support of caring communities, revitalized neighborhoods, and a better world.”

His book recounts how Seattle’s Department of Neighborhoods has involved thousands of residents in community plans and self-help projects. It also gives tips on how ordinary people can make a difference.

Christine DiGiamberardine, recreation coordinator of neighbourhood development in Maple Ridge, said people enjoy being connected to their neighbours, which leads to improving the community.

“He’s going to share lots of stories,” which could give people ideas for their own communities.

“I think people have a desire to be connected.”
