Submissions are now being accepted for the Federation of BC Writers fourth annual literary contest.
There are four categories for entries: flash fiction, short fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction – plus, this year, two bonus categories: featuring BC and debut author. Entries for in the featuring BC category must reference the province in a way that highlights the space, people, important figures, or cultural ideas that are specific to the region. Debut authors are those who have not yet received payment for their written work.
A long list, the top 20 in each category, and short list, the top 10, will be announced in the fall.
In addition to first place winners in each of the four genres, shortlisted participants will have their pieces published in and receive copies of the annual anthology, Roots to Branches, Volume 4.
“We are excited to be hosting this contest again in 2024 and to announce our four judges,” said executive director, Bryan Mortensen.
Harrison Mooney will be judging the creative nonfiction entries, Yvonne Blomer will be the judge for poetry submissions, Lydia Kwa will be judging short fiction, and Barbara Black will be judging flash fiction entries.
"We can’t wait to see what people submit this year. This might be called a literary contest, but we love to see entries across genres, styles, and backgrounds,” added Mortensen.
