The outdoor concert series start to the Port Haney Wharf on July 9.

Summer is synonymous with outdoor concerts. And what’s even better than just a regular outdoor concert: a free outdoor music series, which lasts all summer.

Entering its 16th season, the Maple Ridge Historical Society’s Music on the Wharf series will began on Monday, July 9th at 7:30 p.m. on the Port Haney Wharf.

All four musical performances take place on the wharf, at the foot of 224th Street, east of the West Coast Express station.

Kicking off the season will be Wendy Biscuit Blues, emerging Maple Ridge artists taking on Canadian blues.

When lead singer Wendy Le Van first came to Maple Ridge, she was approached by Wayne Evans of The Nocturnals and they partnered in an alternative bluegrass band. Now, Le Van and her band focus on a mix of swing, delta blues and R and B and have been playing in various venues across the Lower Mainland. We’re looking forward to an engaging performance from this group on July 9th.

The second show of the summer will be taking place on Monday, July 23rd with local Maple Ridge act Penelope Above. This five-piece band plays everything from classic-rock, to blues, to reggae, to “not limiting ourselves to any one genre or style.” We look forward to a unique set.

Starting off the second month of the series, on Aug. 13, is the Bruce James Orchestra. Due to rain last year, the orchestra was not able to perform, so we’re delighted to hear them this year playing music from the 1940s along with current day arrangements of standards.

Our series will end with Vancouver band Good for Grapes, which has been making waves recently in the Canadian music scene and receiving play on local and national radio stations. This five piece folk/alternative band recently put out a new EP, and we’re happy to have the Good for Grapes close out the season for us on Monday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. The band describes its live stage performance as “incredibly active, folk stomping, and energetic; always resulting in an extremely enthusiastic and involved audience,” a perfect way to end our summer concert series.

Please join us Mondays this summer to hear great live music. There is no seating provided at this event, so bring a lawn chair. The best seating area fills up fast, so it is best to be there early. Parking is limited, so plan ahead and carpool if you can.

We are grateful to our many sponsors who help make this a success every year.
