Long weekend expected to be warm and mostly sunny

High streamflow advisory still in effect for Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows

Spray parks across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows were a popular go-to this week for people to cool off with the warm, sunny weather.

And the beautiful weather is supposed to continue throughout the Victoria Day long weekend, according to Environment Canada, which is predicting a mostly hot and sunny weekend.

Friday, May 18, is expected to hit a high of 22 C, 27 C inland, and dipping down to 13 C overnight.

On Saturday, temperatures should reach 22 C again, 25 C inland, and 13 C overnight.

Sunday will see both sun and clouds with temperatures reaching 18 C during the day and 12 C overnight.

And on Monday, the high will be only 17 C, dipping down to 12 C overnight.

Mother’s Day saw a new temperature record in Pitt Meadows of 32.3 C on Sunday, May 14. The old record was 32.2 C set in 1973, according to Environment Canada.

So far there are no special alerts in effect.

This advisory is still in effect.

The BC Ministry of Forests advisory notes that due to the unseasonably hot weather occurring across the province, the Fraser River is beginning to rise because of accelerated snow melt in the mountain snow pack of the Fraser River headwaters.

The ministry is also advising the public to avoid recreational activities like fishing, swimming, boating or hiking near high streamflow rivers or streams.

“Remember, high streamflow can easily trap strong swimmers, increasing risk of drowning,” said the warning online.
