Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows welcome the coming of spring

March 20 is the vernal equinox, or first day of spring

Spring has sprung.

Both the cities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are celebrating the start of spring, with city workers out preparing flower beds and planting.

March 20 is the first day of spring, called the vernal equinox, and the cities are about to become a lot more colourful. Pitt Meadows reports that parks staff have planted more than 20,000 combined tulip and daffodil bulbs, that will be ready to "put on a show" in a few weeks, and the blooms could last into May.

The Maple Ridge Public Library is hosting a plant swap scheduled for April 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and patrons are invited to bring in plants, plant cuttings, or plant babies. It's a chance to exchange plants and chat with fellow gardeners.

On the equinox, the earth is not tiled toward or away from the sun, with the sun precisely above the equator.

The Weather Network is predicting cooler temperatures and more rain than normal for the season through April in British Columbia, turning closer to season norms in May.
