Maple Ridge Community Foundation is bringing back the Citizen of the Year gala this year, after postponing it last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The foundation has opened up nominations for the 2022 Citizen of the Year Awards and fundraising dinner, with a deadline of Mar. 15 and the event will be held on Apr. 2.

People can put in their nominations for one of the three categories, Lifetime Achievement, Teesha Sharma Memorial Under 40 category and Youth category.

The Lifetime Achievement award will honour a dedicated Maple Ridge resident who has been identified as having provided a lifetime of outstanding volunteer contributions locally, nationally and/or internationally. These contributions should have had an impact on Maple Ridge or improved the image of the community.

The Teesha Sharma Memorial Under 40 award is to recognize a young adult or an adult between 20 to 40 years of age, who has made outstanding contributions towards the community, or nationally and/or internationally.

The Youth category award will recognize a youth 19 or younger with outstanding volunteer contributions.

The nominees would need to be residents of Maple Ridge and should consent to be nominated.

In 2020, the foundation had hosted a virtual event to recognize community heroes. Karen Wakita had won the lifetime achievement, Jennifer Bailie won the Teesha Sharma Memorial Award for those under 40, and Emily Barker Voisine won in the youth category.

People can choose to fill out the online forms to nominate for the awards at: https://bit.ly/3gyssGU or can visit mrcf.ca, or contact 604.466.3312.
