Maple Ridge dance competition raises thousands for charity

More than $7,000 raised for the Maple Ridge Community Foundation's Community Chest Program

Dancing shoes are off after another successful Dancing in the Ridge competition in support of the Maple Ridge Community Foundation.

The third annual dancing competition featured seven dancing teams who helped raise $7,140 for the foundation's Community Chest program, a program which offers one-time financial support to families and individuals who find themselves in a crisis to help them to prevent them from spiralling further into poverty.

The competition is modelled after the hit television show 'Dancing with the Stars', where local community leaders are paired with professional dance instructors and judged by prominent local figures.

A variety of dance styles were featured including hip-hop, jazz, contemporary, and more.

"The crowd was electric, the performers lit up the stage, and the energy was absolutely unforgettable," said the foundation online.

Dance duo Tyson Aubin, and his caregiver and assistant Dakota – who made up the team Guardians of a Wishing Well – were the winners of the competition. Aubin, a local actor and active volunteer in the community, who has cerebral palsy, performed in his mobility aid.

Before the competition, Dakota, who is also an artist, said their goal was to amplify Aubin's voice.

"This is not just a dance. It’s a movement to amplify your message and be a symbol of hope for others," she explained online.

"Through our dance, we share strength, spirit and resilience, united by one powerful purpose. To make a difference."

Team Fools on the Hill, made up of Cathy and Jon Driver, came second. And team Badass Babes Dance was the team that raised the most money.

"Thank you to everyone who joined us at Dancing in the Ridge for an incredible evening of community spirit. Let’s do it all again next year," the foundation said.

The Maple Ridge Community Foundation is a registered charitable organization that brings together those who are interested in giving within their community, and registered Maple Ridge charities/non-profit organizations that are in need of financial support.

Donations to the foundation are managed in a series of endowment funds which earn income from interest, dividends, and capital gains.
